Machinima
The Complete Guide to Making Animated Movies in 3D Virtual Environments
(with Dave Morris and Dave Lloyd)
One of the first books written on the way people were using game engines to make no-budget movies, and how this technique was used on big budget productions such as Troy and Lord of the Rings. It takes readers through every step of the process, from screenwriting techniques and storyboarding through character design, lighting, sound effects, and closing credits.

“Well written and illustrated … a great read within its introductory scope.”

The Machinima Reader
MIT Press
(edited by Henry Lowood and Michael Nitsche)
The first academic book to chart the emergence of machinima as a game-based cultural production that spans technologies and media, forming new communities of practice on its way to a history, an aesthetic, and a market. I contributed a chapter.
Selected reviews
“A must-read for any theorist of machinima. Brilliant essays by leading scholars in a brand new field (such as Friedrich Kirschner, Jeffrey Bardzel, Henry Lowood and Matt Kelland)… a landmark book in the history of a rapidly developing film art.”
“The single most important piece of collated works on the subject.”
